Febuary 2012 Billy Weeks - "Photojournalist."

Billy Weeks has worked as a journalist for over 27 years. His career started with the Chattanooga Times in 1984 as a staff photographer. In 1995, he became the Photo Team Leader, and in 1999 he was named Director of Photography/Graphics at The Chattanooga Times Free Press.

As a photojournalist, Weeks has covered assignments that range from the World Series to small villages in Central America. Communication Arts selected his photographs of poverty in Honduras as an Award of Excellence for editorial photography. Additionally, he was a finalist for the Gordon Parks International Photography Award four times, published in B&W Magazine’s portfolio special issue four times, and has received many acknowledgments for journalism.

Weeks has also been an adjunct instructor in photojournalism at Southern Adventist University for the last 24 years. He has been a visiting speaker at many Universities, a two-time presenter at the Southern Short Course for photojournalism, and a traveling instructor for Southern Newspapers Association. He also has taught photojournalism workshops for CNN online and the University of Georgia. He believes that not only should journalists cover their assignments, but they should also give something back to their profession.

Today he lives in Ringgold, Georgia with his wife, two daughters, and a beagle.

As a documentary still photographer, I deal in the past. Once an image is taken, the environment will never be exactly the same. I also understand that it takes as much creativity to capture an image as it does to create one. I believe that a great deal of responsibility lies on a photographer who records history and in some cases the image can bring about change to its subjects or communities. Many great documentary photographers who have influenced my work have photographed in the Chattanooga area. Robert Frank, who authored the book “The Americans” has published images from Chattanooga. Also, Margaret Bourke-White photographed in Ringgold, Georgia for her 1937 book You Have Seen Their Faces. These images are reminders of how important everyday life is to our society, and I believe that documentary still photography is the best way to preserve the culture of the time. As for my own photography, my goal is to make each image tell a story. Each subject is important and if I have chosen the right subject the image has power. Over the last 27 years I have photographed many important events. Some of these events are extraordinary, like presidential visits and breaking news, while others represent daily life in my community or abroad. These images are my statement and I hope they speak publicly for the people who cannot speak for themselves.

Lee is a member of several 3D photography organizations around the world and the Huntsville Photographic Society. His favorite photographic views are scenics of natural areas unspoiled by humans. But he also does some table top, computer, and other experimental 3D work

Andrea and Lea from the Huntsville Photographic Society will present a spectacular, fun-filled evening of 3D photography and videos.
This show consists of the top entrants and winners of an international 3D photography competition (complete with music and narration), several slide shows by our presenters (including Andrea’s recent trip to Australia!), and videos from around the world.
