Bill Lea – November Speaker
PSC November Speaker Bill Lea
Nature Photographer & Black Bear Advocate
Photographic Society of Chattanooga to host Bill Lea
Photographing the wonder of wildlife, landscapes, and a variety of natural subjects from the Canadian Rockies to the Florida Everglades has long been a passion for Bill Lea. Capturing intimate images of wildlife and landscapes in “just the right light” is the trademark of Bill’s photography. He has been leading photo workshops since 1992. More than 7,000 of Bill’s photos have been published. He has authored three coffee-table books and co-authored
others. His most popular book Cades Cove-Window to a Secret World is in its fifth printing. The Everglades-Where Wonders Only Whisper is his most recent book. Bill may be best known for his portrayal of black bears and the Great Smoky Mountains. Photographing black bears for more than two decades has provided Bill with extraordinary opportunities to learn about bears.
For nearly 20 years Bill has been presenting educational programs in an effort to dispel the many myths & untruths about bears.
He has appeared on Dateline NBC, National Public Radio, Midwest Outdoors, Animal Planet, local radio stations, news stations, and a variety of programs. Bill lived among bears for two to three months every year for nearly a decade. He currently posts a bear photo and educational message Monday thru Thursday on his Facebook Page:
www.facebeook.com/BillLeaPhotography.
The enjoyment of sharing the wonder of black bears and nature with others is second only to Bill’s desire for promoting respect for wildlife and all of God’s creation.
And finally, Bill says he would be amiss if he failed to mention how truly blessed he is to have such a wonderful and supportive wife-Klari. Her patience and understanding always endure. He is forever grateful.

When we have captured many images, we then need to bring out the essence of the capture. I believe we pass through four stages of learning and accomplishing enhancing our captured images. This presentation will show the aspects of each stage using images showing the “as captured” image and then the enhanced image.
Each stage will be explained with sample images and images from several other sources to show the extent of the enhancements.
- Stage 1 – Basic and Simple Enhancements – very simple and easy techniques for bringing out the essence of the capture
- Stage 2 – Quality Captures & Enhancements – strong composition, special light, creative use of shadows and highlights, panoramas
- Stage 3 – Instant Impact, Story Telling
- Stage 4 – Photographic Component Art – artistic reality and artistic montage
In 1980 John began using photography in connection with his art background to create color images. By 1984, large-format black and white prints became his specialty. Photography Competitions, Who Cares…You Should!
Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom
Your mamma and daddy told you that it isn’t about winning or losing, it’s about how you play the game. And once again they were right. There is no better way to become a better photographer than through the competi-tion process. It has the ability to focus us as visual artists on what is important, the final image—not the camer-as, not the techniques, but what we end up with. Yeah, those get you to the final image, but they are rarely as important as we think. We’ll discuss why competitions are crucial for you to become a better photographer. At the same time, we will review some of the images from the “What’s for Dinner?” photo contest. I hope that I get you more engaged in this scary but exciting element of photography.
