It’s only an ego trip, the same people always win, I’ll never be good enough to win…ever heard or felt this about photography competitions? It isn’t a surprising reaction as there is only one winner and everyone else is at best the first-place loser. When judging, people often say they hope it goes well. I always reply, “One person will be happy and the rest will blame it on me.”

Your mamma and daddy told you that it isn’t about winning or losing, it’s about how you play the game. And once again they were right. There is no better way to become a better photographer than through the competi-tion process. It has the ability to focus us as visual artists on what is important, the final image—not the camer-as, not the techniques, but what we end up with. Yeah, those get you to the final image, but they are rarely as important as we think. We’ll discuss why competitions are crucial for you to become a better photographer. At the same time, we will review some of the images from the “What’s for Dinner?” photo contest. I hope that I get you more engaged in this scary but exciting element of photography.
