John Mariana – June Speaker

John Mariana, renowned photographer, and photography educator will make a Zoom presentation to the PSC on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at 7:00 p.m., EDT.  John’s presentation will be “Developing the Final Image – Artistic Stages of Image Enhancement.”

John describes his presentation as follows:

When we have captured many images, we then need to bring out the essence of the capture. I believe we pass through four stages of learning and accomplishing enhancing our captured images. This presentation will show the aspects of each stage using images showing the “as captured” image and then the enhanced image.

Each stage will be explained with sample images and images from several other sources to show the extent of the enhancements. 

• Stage 1 – Basic and Simple Enhancements – very simple and easy techniques for bringing out the essence of the capture
• Stage 2 – Quality Captures & Enhancements – strong composition, special light, creative use of shadows and highlights, panoramas
• Stage 3 – Instant Impact, Story Telling
• Stage 4 – Photographic Component Art – artistic reality and artistic montage

In 1980 John began using photography in connection with his art background to create color images.  By 1984, large-format black and white prints became his specialty.  John’s early artistic training combined with photography gives his images a unique visual and emotional presentation. Today, John makes photos in digital format to bring a new and different look to his work with a primary focus on his unique color palette with the visual and emotional presentation.  He has won numerous awards for his large print images and regularly donates his work and talents to non-profit endeavors.

His first book, Visions of Scotland, was published in 2008 with dramatic images of churches, abbeys, castles, and the whimsical aspects of Scottish life.  Presented as a photographic guide through the South Borderlands and the Highlands, it was followed by, Visions of Italy, a beautiful fine art book with impressive images of Venice, Florence Tuscany, and Rome.
